The in-house restaurant serves exquisite Ecuadorian cuisine, and all of the city's major attractions are just a short walk away.

Thanks to its central location, Casa Gangotena is the perfect base for exploring historic Quito, which, along with Krakow, was the first city to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Stroll along the old cobbled Calle de la Ronda, where you'll find many galleries and craft shops housed in exquisite Spanish-style buildings. If you want to see the city from a bird's eye view, take the TelefériQo, one of the highest cable cars in the world. It runs from the city center over the eastern side of the Pichincha volcano to a fantastic viewpoint. From here, you can even hike to the summit.

In keeping with the overall splendor of the building, all 31 rooms, including one suite, feature high ceilings and large windows. Many of the bedrooms are decorated with murals and designed in the classic style of the 1920s, while the bathrooms are bright and modern with white marble. Some rooms overlook the Jesuit church La Compañia de Jesús. Those who like romance will love the Balcony Junior Suite – it features an original fresco and a beautiful stucco terrace overlooking the courtyard garden and the dramatic hills of Quito.

The in-house restaurant follows the philosophy of mestizo cuisine and values the country's gastronomic traditions and the use of regional ingredients. Thirty percent of the food is sourced from local vendors in historic Quito. From this, the Quito-born chef conjures up delicious Ecuadorian dishes ranging from swordfish with plantains to – for the brave – llama spring rolls. Be sure to try the Ecuadorian fino de aroma cocoa, served in the courtyard, which is an exceptional alternative to afternoon tea, or refresh yourself with a Cedrón Spritz at the wood-paneled, country-style bar.

Details of Casa Gangotena

The elegant Casa Gangotena is a small house that serves as an ideal base for exploring the historic city of Quito. The original building, an 18th-century family residence, was destroyed by fire in 1914 and rebuilt in the 1920s, when it was converted into a boutique hotel. Some original features, including two frescoes and decorative painted tin ceilings, are reminders of its rich history, while the high ceilings with their magnificent stucco elements have been lovingly restored. Thirty rooms and a spacious junior suite are available for your accommodation. Decorated in the classic style of the 1920s, the rooms impress with their simple elegance and, in some cases, a magnificent view of the city's historic buildings.
