Sumaq

Cusco
from $359

Its proximity to Machu Picchu, fantastic views of the valley, stylish interior, and exquisite local cuisine make Sumaq not only one of the best hotels in Aguas Calientes, but in all of Peru. Just a 90-minute hike separates you from the legendary Inca site, which you can visit several times during your dream vacation and then cross off your bucket list. After adventurous days, the spa welcomes you for a soothing massage—or you can indulge in a traditional ritual.

In keeping with the rest of the hotel, the rooms combine dark woods with mostly wine-red fabrics, gold tones, and sturdy blocks of sand-colored marble. Numerous ceramic imitations from the Inca period adorn the rooms and lend them an authentic and historic flair. The bathrooms are crafted from solid marble slabs and large mirrors and feature a separate toilet, shower, and bathtub. The rooms with a view of the valley are particularly special and offer what is possibly the most beautiful hotel panorama in all of Peru.

The view of the valley from the restaurant on the first floor is just as spectacular as the varied and innovative cuisine. The Sumaq salad, for example, is a delicious mixture of local leaves, artichokes, and nuts, served with a sweet honey dressing. The meat dishes, which are grilled to perfection in the small garden behind the house, are also highly recommended. Even more local ingredients are featured in the tasting menu or the informative and culturally valuable Pachamanca Ground Cooking Experience, where slow-cooked dishes are prepared in a natural setting.

There's no question about it: Sumaq scores particularly highly for its location, with Machu Picchu and all its splendor just a 25-minute bus ride or 90-minute hike away. The tour with a local shaman is highly recommended. You can also take part in coca leaf readings, traditional rituals, or pisco sour and ceviche courses. Last but not least, the Aqlla Spa in the basement of the hotel offers a high standard of service and promises holistic relaxation and regeneration for new adventures after a long day.

Details of the Sumaq

Visiting the Inca cult site Machu Picchu once in a lifetime is a dream come true. If you also want to visit this place of longing, the Sumaq Hotel is the perfect place to stay – it's not for nothing that the hotel is called "Machu Picchu Hotel." It is not far from here, and the building, constructed in typical Andean style, offers you the utmost comfort and pure relaxation in an elegant atmosphere. Some of the spacious rooms even have their own balcony with a magnificent view of the mountains and river.
