The luxury lies in the incredible tranquility of unspoiled nature and the immediate proximity to Iceland's most fascinating natural spectacles. Visit the Icelandic horses in the on-site stables and swing yourself into the saddle for an unforgettable ride through the rugged landscape. Both the legendary Golden Circle with its thundering waterfalls and bubbling geysers and the Highlands and South Coast are within easy reach. October to April is the Northern Lights season: with its remote location, the retreat offers a good chance of seeing this mysterious phenomenon with your own eyes.

Living

The retreat consists of several small houses covered with turf, made of slate and Austrian pine wood, which are picturesquely nestled in the unspoiled landscape. Each so-called Torfhús can accommodate up to four guests in two bedrooms and features a fully equipped kitchen, a spacious living room, a geothermally heated basalt pool, and a private veranda. The Torfbær Suites each offer one bedroom and share a heated pool set into the ground between three suites. Furnished with lots of wood and natural materials such as furs and leather, the interiors offer cozy and authentic retreats.

At Torfhús Retreat, you can expect a refreshing dining concept without a fixed menu. Chef Thorarinn Eggertsson describes his work as "anti-à la carte," because the dishes change every day and are adapted to the season and the personal preferences of the guests. Almost all ingredients are sourced from within a 10-mile radius of the hotel; salmon and char are caught in the surrounding rivers and seafood comes directly from local coastal fishermen. Excellent wines from the extensive wine cellar perfectly complement the fine cuisine.

Details of the Torfhus Retreat

Surrounded by Iceland's dramatic, rugged landscape, the charming Torfhús Retreat is an ideal base for exploring this fascinating country. The cluster of small houses with turf roofs and wooden cladding is inspired by a traditional Viking village and blends almost seamlessly into the unspoiled natural surroundings. Each Torfhús offers rustic luxury and spectacular views across the volcanic plains to the snow-capped mountains and the breathtaking Langjökull glacier. Inside, the décor is rustic and typically Icelandic, with fur rugs, lots of pine wood, and industrial-chic lamps, while outside, a geothermally heated basalt pool invites you to relax under the midnight sun or the dancing green-blue veils of the northern lights during the season from October to April.
